Neurology
Neurology (clinical neuroscience) is concerned with the diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. The causes and symptoms of neurological diseases are diverse. Most frequent complains are related to sensory problems, paralyses, vertigo, imbalance, incoordination of movements, visual problems, seizures, pain syndromes and certain disorders of mental function (like shortage of memory).
The spectrum of neurology comprises:
- Developmental abnormalities and their consequences
- Disorders of cerebral circulation (stroke, cerebral hemorrhage and infarction), transient insufficiencies of cerebral blood supply, pathology of the cerebral and cervical arteries
- Loss of consciousness, epilepsy
- Movement disorders, like Parkinson’s disease, different tremors
- Infectious diseases (meningitis, encephalitis)
- Auto-immune inflammatory diseases (Multiple Sclerosis)
- Degenerative diseases (incl. dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, )
- Pain syndromes (headaches, neuralgias)
- Diseases of the peripheral nerves (facial palsy, polyneuropathies, spinal nerve disorders, low-back pain, sciatica)
- Trauma to the head or spine
- Neurological complications of metabolic or hormonal diseases
The neurological examination is usually taking place as a part of a general check up, but for patients who turn directly to a neurologist, consultation with other specialists may be necessary, since certain diseases may be associated with abnormalities of different organs of the body.
Methods of neurological examination
The general neurological physical examination takes 15-45 minutes in general.
After taking the medical history we perform the physical investigation. Depending on the finding, further tests may be required (laboratory tests, ECG, X-ray, CT, MRI etc.)
Therapeutic facilities in neurology
Assuming that during neurological assessment surgically treatable disease gets discovered, neurosurgical intervention is indicated.
In the rest of the cases we have the following options:
- pharmacological treatment (with tablets, injections or infusions).
- electrotherapy (nerve or muscle stimulation)
- physiotherapy
