Otoplasty / Ear surgery
Ears that appear to stick out or are too large or asymmetric may cause problems even when the patient is young. It is best to wait until the young patient asks for the surgery on their ears because their peers bully them in school. This usually begins at about 5-7 years of age. It is generally young men who need ear surgery because they wish for to change their hairstyle.
Surgery on the ears is done under local anesthesia in an out-patient system and it is painless. The patient my go home immediately after the operation. For 8-10 days, however, the patient should be wearing bandage on their heads similar to a hair band. In the next 2-3 weeks a head band similar to those used by athletes will do. Sutures are taken out between the tenth and the fourteenth days. The operation does not influence the hearing. There will be some stitches behind the ears but they heal quickly. There will be no scars on the front of the ear.
